The Kolpak deal has been a burning debate, especially for South African cricket. As per the rule, a player represents an English county, giving up the right to play for his nation. Also, after playing for four years for the county, the players become eligible to represent England in international cricket. South African cricketers, including the likes of Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw, have previously joined the deal.

Kuhn- The newest addition to the Kolpak list

Recently, Heino Kuhn, the Proteas batsman became the recent entrant into the deal and will ply his trade for Kent in all three formats. “I’m delighted to get the opportunity to play county cricket and I’m looking forward to joining the Kent squad. I want to contribute positively to the team and bring my experience from winning trophies in South Africa.” Kuhn was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Paul Downton, the director of cricket in Kent, also expressed his delight for the signing to the media “We’re delighted to welcome a player of Heino’s quality and experience to the club. We believe Heino can complement our talented batsmen across the three formats and serve as a mentor to those coming through the ranks.” Downton remarked.

Kuhn has been a prolific run-scorer for the Titans in the domestic cricket. However, the wicket-keeper batsman hasn’t quite been able to cement his position in the national team. He made his international debut back in 2009 against England but has played a handful of games for the Proteas. His last game was a Test match against England at Manchester in August 2017.

Kuhn is approaching the age of 34 and his steadily nearing the end of his career. Therefore, the fact that he decided to sign the Kolpak deal didn’t spring a surprise. Places in the national squad are limited and it won’t be bewildering if more cricketers from the nation tread the Kolpak route.
