Afghanistan, on Tuesday (January 25), advanced to fifth place in the ICC Super League points table after recording a 75-run win in the third and final ODI against Netherlands. It was indeed an emphatic win for the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side as they dominated the Dutch team in all three departments. Having won the previous two clashes, Afghanistan also walked away with a 3-0 series triumph.

Speaking of how the third ODI panned out, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium in Doha. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz perished with just 22 runs on the board as Netherlands got off to an impressive start. However, Riaz Hussan joined forces with Rahmat Shah and the duo steadied the ship with a 86-run stand for the second wicket.

The late impetus was provided by Najibullah Zadran who scored 71 off just 59 deliveries. As a result, Afghanistan posted 254/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing the challenging target, Netherlands got off to a perfect start with openers Scott Edwards and Colin Ackermann adding 103 runs for the first wicket. However, Qais Ahmad and Rashid Khan spun their web in the middle overs as the Dutch team suffered a batting collapse.

Netherlands subsequently lost the clash by 75 runs, handing Afghanistan a 3-0 series win. Meanwhile, this win meant Afghanistan advance to the fifth place in the ODI Super League points table, having won all six games so far. On the other hand, Netherlands are languishing at the 13th place with two wins in seven outings. It must be noted that India, the hosts of the 2023 World Cup, are placed at the eighth position.

Najibullah Zadran played really well at the end: Hashmatullah Shahidi

Meanwhile, Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi heaped massive praises on Najibullah Zadran and Riaz Hussan for their stellar performances. “I want to congratulate my nation for these brilliant wins. I’m enjoying all the things and it has been very good for me. We were struggling in the initial overs, I had the belief that we could play well in the later overs,” said Shahidi in the post-match conversation.

“Najib played really well at the end. I’m very happy that we have a lot of future young talents who can play for Afghanistan. I’m very happy for Riaz and the other youngsters. It is pleasing to win all 6 (3 against Ireland and 3 here) and we want to go to the next series with a high morale,” he added.
