With the win over Pakistan in the first Test match of the three-match series, England has strengthened its position in the ICC World Test Championship table. Owing to the brilliant knock of 84* and 75 runs by Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler, the hosts could taste the victory against the Men in Green by 3 wickets.

Victory against Pakistan helped the England players in continuing their winning spree with three matches. In the month of July, England had acquired the third spot in the Test Championship Table leaving behind New Zealand owing to their win by 2-1 against the Caribbeans in the Wisden Trophy.

Though at the end of the second day during the Manchester Test against Pakistan, it looked like the host would barely manage to draw the match, forget about winning. However, the England men were quick to strike back as they thrashed Pakistan’s batting line-up in the second innings.

Azhar Ali, captain of Pakistan’s Test team, won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening batsman Shan Masood emerged as a hero for the Pakistan team as he scored the career-best 156-run knock. With the cameos by Babar Azam and Shadab Khan, Pakistan managed to put a score of 326 on the board at the end of the first innings.

In reply, England couldn’t do much as the duo of Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas gave massive blows to the home team. The spinner Yasir Shah also played his part as he tore apart England’s batting line-up by taking a 4-wicket haul. All this led to Pakistan taking a 107-run lead.

However, the visitors couldn’t capitalize their lead, as the England bowlers scalped all the wickets in 46.4 overs giving away just 169 runs. After that despite the sincere efforts by Pakistan’s bowlers, England could easily chase down the target of 277 runs owing to the 139-run partnership by Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler.

England’s position in ICC World Test Championship Table

After the win against Pakistan, England stands at the third position in the ICC World Test Championship Table with 266 points. India is the table topper with 360 points while Australia is in the second position with 296 points.

This also means that England is only 30 points away from the Kangaroos and would be looking forward to registering victory in both the upcoming Test matches against Pakistan to overtake Australia.

Meanwhile, after suffering from third loss in the ICC World Test Championship, Pakistan stands at 5th position with 140 points and would be keen to overtake New Zealand which is just 40 points ahead from it with two consecutive wins against England.
