Even before the commencement of the inaugural edition of the Lankan Premier League (LPL), a controversy has erupted regarding the participation of the former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs in the commentary panel. On November 9, the official Twitter handle of LPL had announced the commentary panel that includes the likes of Mike Haysman, Roshan Abeysinghe, Russel Arnold, Aamir Sohail, Herschelle Gibs and Daren Ganga.

However on November 13, Gibbs reacted to the post saying that he himself is not aware of being a part of the commentary panel for the Lankan league.

Reposting the tweet, the veteran wrote, “This is a news to me.” Meanwhile, there was a twist in the tale as an old picture surfaced on social media where Herschelle Gibbs can be seen reacting with the ‘thumbs up’ emoji on the news of him holding the mic for the LPL. Tagging Gibbs in that post, a Twitter user tweeted, “Looking forward to see you soon in SL.”

Herschelle Gibbs clarifies about his participation in LPL

The South African replied to the post saying, “not happening” before clarifying the matter entirely. Seeing this remark by Gibbs, a Sri Lankan journalist Azzam Ameen questioned the former batsman that how can he say he isn’t participating in LPL when he himself had retweeted the post and had reacted to it on his Instagram account.

Ameen tweeted, “So isn’t it wrong to say it’s News for you now, when you had retweeted this 3 days ago and confirmed in Instagram that you are coming to SL.” To this, Herschelle Gibbs clarified that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had kept him in dark for the past three weeks and informed him on Friday morning that the deal stands cancelled. He further added that the authorities shouldn’t have advertised his name if they weren’t sure.

Gibbs replied: “They kept me waiting 3 weeks only to tell me this morn it’s not gonna happen… they shouldn’t have advertised it in the first place. there you go!”

Lankan Premier League will begin from November 26 with Colombo locking horns against Kandy at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota. The two semi-finals will be played on December 13 and 14, followed by the final on December 16.
