The highest partnership registered in the history of Big Bash League (BBL) history for any wicket is worth 172 runs. This partnership was established in the match between Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes, played on 9th January 2012, at Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Melbourne Stars, led by Cameron White, won the toss and opted to bat. The openers, Robert John Quiney and Luke James Wright justified their skipper’s decision by producing the best ever partnership for any wicket in the history of the tournament.

Opening the innings, the two stayed together and put on a record 172 runs partnership for the first wicket in 16.4 overs, plundering at the rate of 10.32 runs per over.

Xavier Doherty, the skipper of Hobart Hurricanes, tried as many as six bowlers, but none could have any impact on the batsmen. Medium pacer, Rhett Lockyear went for 34 runs in his 2 overs, while Doherty himself was whacked for 32 runs in his spell of 3 overs. The other bowlers also went for more than 9.0 runs an over.

In the process, Quiney went on to score 62 runs with 4 fours and a six, facing 50 deliveries at a 124.0 strike rate. His half-century came in just 39 deliveries with 3 fours and 1 six.

The bulk of the scoring was done by Luke Wright who amassed 117 runs facing just 60 deliveries with 8 fours and 9 sixes at a massive strike rate of 195.0. His half-century came in just 23 deliveries with 2 fours and 5 sixes while the century was notched off in just 44 deliveries with 6 fours and 9 sixes.

Melbourne Stars put up 203 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Chasing 204 runs for a win, Hobart Hurricanes could score only 184 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs, with Travis Birt (51) and Owais Shah (55) making significant contributions. While Birt’s half-century came in 22 deliveries (3 fours, 5 sixes), Shah’s half-ton came in 34 deliveries (2 fours, 2 sixes). Eventually, Melbourne Stars won the match by 19 runs.
