Batting partnerships are essential in any format of cricket for any side to have a command over the game. Two or three solid batting partnerships can set the game for any team in white-ball cricket. In the Asia Cup (ODI format), there have been several instances when some batting pairs complemented each other and stitched some crucial partnerships in the continental tournament.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are the latest entrants in the list of highest partnership for any wicket, they hold the record for highest run by batting pair for the third wicket with 233 runs. In the Super Four game against Pakistan on the rain-hit reserved day Kohli and Rahul went bonkers against the potential Pakistan bowlers, both registered their respective centuries helping India post a humungous total of 356/2 in 50 overs.
In the 2012 installment of the Asia Cup, Pakistan openers Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez played an aggressive brand of cricket against India and stitched a huge partnership of 224 runs for the first wicket in the fifth game of the tournament. The huge stand is still the highest partnership in the continental tournament. Riding on emphatic partnership from their openers, Pakistan succeeded in putting up 329 runs on the board at the end of their innings. Giving a strong reply to Pakistan, India chased the target in 47.5 overs with the help of the crucial 172-run stand between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Cricket fans saw one of the best partnerships of the Asia Cup again in its 2018 edition when India thrashed Pakistan by nine wickets in the third game of the Super Four held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Batting second after losing the toss, India were tasked to chase 238 in their 50 overs. Pursuing the average total, India openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan looked ferocious with their bats and took the Pakistan bowling attack to the cleaners with their spunky batting shows.
Both openers did a 210-run partnership for the first wicket, with Dhawan becoming the highest contributor with his 114 runs off just 100 deliveries. At the end of the day, the southpaw also received the Player of the Match award for his fabulous knock in his team’s massive nine-wicket triumph against the arch-rivals.
