If someone knows Sunil Gavaskar, they are likely to know his obsession with ‘mishti doi‘, which is a famous dessert from West Bengal. It is basically sweet curd which is found on almost every street in Kolkata. The former Indian batter, over the years, has forged a strong sense of connection with Kolkata and has been seen several times expressing how much he loves the sweet confection from the city of joy.

During the first Test between England and India, Gavaskar was seen in the studio of Sony Sports enjoying his favorite dessert with another former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag. During the pre-match show, the two former cricketers were seen taking a bite of the mishti doi, while Gavaskar narrated the story of him being in love with the dessert.

Sunil Gavaskar reveals how Sourav Ganguly’s father would bring him mishti doi

Gavaskar revealed that when he was the Indian captain, he would often have to go for matches in Kolkata. He recalled that at the time, Sourav Ganguly’s father, Chandidas Ganguly was the honorary secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). “He would come to pick me up from the Airport and always had a mishti doi ready,” Gavaskar said.

The former batter revealed that Sourav’s father would always make sure that the hotel in which Gavaskar was staying had a huge Handi (a clay bowl used to serve and preserve mishti doi) in the refrigerator. “That was for the eight days I was going to be in the city. Three days leading up to the Test match and for the five days of the Test,” Gavaskar recalled.

The cricketer-turned-commentator has been known for his cheeky humor and tried to run a request by the current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. “I have only one complain, when he was the honorary secretary of the CAB, he would bring me huge handis of mishti doi but now he has become the BCCI president, but he doesn’t bring anything,” Gavaskar said as Sehwag on the side burst out laughing.

Sehwag further had some words for his former skipper, Ganguly, as he asked him to bring mishti doi for Gavaskar and him whenever he meets them again. The video of the chat was uploaded on the Twitter handle of Sony Sports, with their social media team making sure the message gets to the BCCI president as they tagged him as well.
