After an exciting opening day of the Hong Kong World Sixes 2017, it was time for the final day to get underway. The proceedings started with an exhibition match between Hong Kong Women and Hong Kong Dragons; having scored 68, the Dragons won the game by 33 runs. While almost all the teams were in contention to qualify for the final it was pretty clear that Pakistan would make it through not just because of their place on the table but the way they played thus far, led by Sohail Tanvir the team had enough ammunition to beat the best.

Bangladesh after a promising start on day one failed to continue their run and were knocked out of the semi-final race by the Australians who didn’t have a particularly good time at the start of the tournament. South Africa having won two out of their three games yesterday had laid the ground and capitalized on it today winning the important games. In the semi-final, it was Australia vs Pakistan and South Africa vs New Zealand.

The Proteas and Pakistan won their games to make it to the big final. When it mattered the most, batting first the Men in Green posted a huge 123/6 on the board in their 5 overs. Their bowling is their strength and the Proteas needed to produce something magnificent to win this game. Skipper Tanvir after bagging a duck with the bat had a poor outing with the ball.

His one over cost Pakistan 37 runs and set the tone for the chase in South Africa’s favour. But the game went down the wire and Sohail Khan brought them back in the game with a very fine last over. On the last ball they needed 4 runs to win and AR Swanepoel hit it for a boundary and South Africa successfully defended their title winning the Hong Kong World Sixes 2017.
