The former India wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani feels that the young Rishabh Pant should be groomed properly in the domestic arena before throwing him into the hardships of international cricket. The left-hander is currently in Sri Lanka playing in the ongoing Nidahas Trophy and has struggled so far in the first couple of T20 Internationals. He is also being looked at as a potential replacement for MS Dhoni. However, Kirmani feels that Pant shouldn’t go the way of Parthiv Patel who also made his debut at a very young age.

Parthiv was with the Indian team 15 years ago in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003 and after shining for a short period of time, he struggled significantly. Subsequently, the wicket-keeper was dropped from the side and only made his comeback in the national side in 2016 during the home series against England. He also featured in the last couple of Test matches against South Africa recently.

Everyone is not Sachin Tendulkar

Syed Kirmani, while speaking to the media, believed that Rishabh Pant should be monitored a bit longer in the domestic arena and should not be going Parthiv’s way. “Everyone is not Sachin Tendulkar, who will be a success at 16 years. He was a prodigy but that’s not the case with everyone else. Parthiv was inducted very early which shouldn’t have happened. Rishabh is talented but he should be groomed enough so that he doesn’t go the Parthiv way,” he said.

Kirmani further pointed out the fact that Parthiv Patel was rushed to the senior team which should’ve never happened. “Parthiv was inducted very early — right from U-19 to senior team (he had played India A when he was summoned for England series). That should have never happened. Parthiv suffered as he was not ready. He suffered because of lack of experience and started lagging behind. That’s why I stress about grooming someone at the domestic level. Don’t induct a Pant or a Sanju Samson straightaway,” he added.
