Pakistan once again proved their unpredictability as they sneaked through a 14-run win against the hosts and the title favourites, England. A collective batting effort from the Pakistan batters saw them finishing on 348/8 in the 50 overs. The spinners struck early to leave the home side reeling at 118/4. Joe Root (107) and Jos Buttler (103) rescued their side and were looking to finish on their own at one stage. However, both fell soon after completing their centuries and the lower order were left with a tough task of scoring at nearly 12 an over.

Bringing an end to streaks

1 – Pakistan registered their first win in 13 ODI matches since defeating South Africa in Johannesburg. They lost each of their previous 11 completed ODIs; their longest such streak.

16 – This defeat brought an end to England’s 16-match winning streak while chasing in completed ODIs at home. Only Windies (18 in 1983-1990) won more ODI matches in succession while chasing at home than England.


The firsts in World Cup

1 – For the first time in the World Cups, two batsmen scored centuries in the same game for England. They had 11 individual centuries in World Cups previously but none of the two came in the same match.


1 – England became the first team in the history of the World Cup to lose a game despite two players scoring centuries. Previous 15 instances of two players scoring centuries in the same CWC innings resulted in wins.

6 – England hit 300+ in each of their last six ODI innings; the joint-longest streak for any team. Australia also recorded 300+ totals in six straight ODI matches in 2007.


A record total by Pakistan

348/8 – Pakistan’s total of 348/8 in this game is the highest total in the World Cup for any team without an individual century. The previous highest CWC total without an individual ton was 341/6 by South Africa against UAE in 2015, where the highest individual score was 99.


348/8 – This total of 348/8 is also Pakistan’s 2nd highest total in a World Cup game. Their highest is 349/10 against Zimbabwe during the 2007 edition. This is also the highest that England conceded in a CWC game. Australia scored 342/9 in the previous edition in Melbourne against the English team.


Nearly the highest in CWC for England

334/9 – England’s total of 334/9 is the 2nd highest by any side while chasing in the World Cups. They made 338/8 against India during the tied game in 2011 edition.


334/9 – The total of 334/9 by England is also the highest by any team in a World Cup defeat. They bettered their own record of 327/8 which they posted against Ireland in the 2011 edition while batting first.


Another record for Buttler

75 – Jos Buttler’s 75-ball century is the fastest for England in the World Cup. The previous fastest CWC ton by an England batsman came off 90 balls by Kevin Pietersen in 2007 against the Windies.


A Root special

2 – Joe Root became only the 2nd player to score more than one century in the World Cup for England. Root scored his maiden CWC ton against Sri Lanka in the 2015 edition. Kevin Pietersen also scored two centuries in the World Cups for England.


Malik returns after 12 years

12y 74d – Shoaib Malik featured in a World Cup game in 12 years and 74 days; the longest gap between two CWC appearances for a team.


Batsmen contribute for Pakistan

5 – Each of Pakistan’s top five scored 35 and more runs in this game; only the 2nd such instance in a World Cup match. The other instance was also recorded by Pakistan when they posted 338/5 in 60 overs against Sri Lanka in Swansea in the 1983 World Cup.


Safe hands from Woakes

4 – Number of catches Chris Woakes has taken in this game; the first outfielder from England to take four catches in an ODI game. Overall, only Jonty Rhodes (5) managed to take more than four catches in an ODI game.
