When Jasprit Bumrah was seen bowling for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), not many gave him the chance of making it big at the international level. His unique and awkward bowling action raised doubts in the minds of the cricket experts as they felt he wouldn’t last long. Even the former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev was one of them and the man himself has admitted now that Bumrah has proved him wrong with his scintillating performances.

It only took a few IPL matches for Bumrah to break into the international scene in 2016 for the first time when India toured Australia for a limited-overs series. His exceptional show in T20Is and ODIs led him to make his debut in the longest format of the game in January in South Africa tour last year. Since then the 25-year-old has been the lynchpin of the Test team and is rocking the stage in the ongoing series against Australia as well.

Hats off to him

Jasprit Bumrah registered his third five-wicket haul in the Boxing Day Test which India won by a massive 137 runs. He was menacing in Perth and Adelaide and deservedly leads the charts with 20 wickets so far. Kapil Dev was immensely impressed with his show and admitted to having been proving wrong by Bumrah.

“I have to tell you that Bumrah has proved me wrong. When I saw him first time I had thought (whether) he could last long with this kind of action, but he has. Hats off to him and I really compliment him for his superlative show in Australia. His mindset must be very strong,” he said while speaking to the Times of India.

Bumrah’s pace is also his speciality as he knocks over the batsmen with his searing yorker and also clocked 151.4 kmph in the ongoing Test series. Kapil was overjoyed to see an Indian bowler generating such speeds on a consistent basis. “I think he is fabulous. With such a short run-up, if he can generate 140-plus speeds consistently, you have to respect him. He has a special shoulder. These types of bowlers are unique,” the 1983 World Cup-winning captain added.
