Although India suffered yet another heartbreak in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand, the fans got to hear a refreshing voice in the commentary panel that not only won the hearts of Indian fans but also experts and critics of the game. The man behind the voice was none other than India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik. He was only one of the two Indians in the press box, the other being Sunil Gavaskar.

The panel had likes of Ian Bishop, Isa Guha, Nasser Hussain, and Michael Atherton, but the 36-year-old stood his ground and managed to deliver crisp and neat commentary during the course of the six-day Test. Fans lavished praise on Karthik’s understanding of the game and the way he used examples to describe batters and bowlers.

At times Karthik was funny and trolled himself by stating how he would have easily been run-out at the non-striker’s end due to not having long legs and reach as Shubman Gill. Karthik was first seen doing commentary during the India England T20I series representing the Sky Sports panel. His commentary to describe Jos Buttler and Virat Kohli earned appreciation from fans and experts. This time during the WTC final, he amazed everyone by his choice of words, albeit maintaining humor too.

The wicketkeeper-batter expressed his gratitude towards fans and wrote: “This one, I just cannot describe in words… I started this journey to experience the other side of cricket and wanted to share the journey with y’all too… and the love and appreciation I got from everyone just made everything worth it! Love you all!” Dinesh Karthik wrote in an Instagram post.

Dinesh Karthik to commentate during The Hundred

Karthik’s not leaving the United Kingdom soon, as he will be part of The Hundred, which is all set to begin from July 21. After a lot of speculation and postponement due to COVID-19, the tournament is all set to get rolling.

When quizzed on making a comeback into the Indian team, the 36-year-old feels he should be in the scheme of things in at least the T20 cricket.

“100%. I think if you go by my stats, in domestic cricket, in the IPL, in T20Is – I’m very confident and I genuinely believe I should be there in the team. The rest is up to the selectors and the think tank to obviously pick the team. I believe I can contribute to this team in the middle order and I’m looking forward to showcasing my skills in the T20 format,” said Karthik in an interaction with Sportskeeda.
