New Zealand’s opening batsman Devon Conway announced himself in style in the international circuit. Conway was included in New Zealand’s playing XI in the first Test of the two-match against England earlier this month. Playing for the first time in the purest format of the game, the 29-year-old smashed a double century at Lord’s.

Conway became only the sixth cricketer overall to score a double-ton on Test debut. Though the first Test between the two countries ended in a draw, the debutant stole all the thunder with his knock of 200 off 347. He carried his brilliant form in the second Test match against England as he scored 80 runs in the first innings.

Born in South Africa, the 29-year-old moved to New Zealand in 2017 and got a contract with Wellington for the 2018-19 season. He emerged as the highest run-getter in the Plunket Shield the same year. Conway’s Wellington coach, Glenn Pocknall, was involved in an interactive interaction where he spoke at length about the opening batter.

Devon Conway can shift gears depending on the situation: Glenn Pocknall

Pocknall revealed that Conway has the ability to just concentrate on his batting and eliminate any distractions that can affect his game. The veteran also added that he saw a glimpse of India’s decorated spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in Conway. “He (Conway) has an amazing ability to just bat and take out any possible distractions that may be present and could affect his skills.

“He started with Wellington as a wicketkeeper-batsman as we saw an opportunity there for him. I saw a glimpse of (Ravindra) Jadeja in Conway. Originally, I said Jadeja but I’m not sure anymore,” Conway’s Wellington coach, Glenn Pocknall, told timesofindia.com.

Further, Glenn reckoned that Conway can shift his gears quickly depending on the situation of the game and has the mental ability to adapt to any situation. “He has shown he can shift gears depending on the situation and what the conditions are. This is a great skill to have and shows that his mental application and ability to adapt are brilliant. He is now starting to have his own style and uniqueness as a player,” felt Pocknall.
