Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin recently equaled Muttiah Muralitharan’s feat of being the joint-fastest to rack up 350 Test wickets. The off-spinner celebrated his comeback to International cricket by claiming seven wickets in South Africa’s first innings in Visakhapatnam.
The off-spinner has been in the news whether it is about his place in the Indian set-up or his Indian Premier League franchise, Kings XI Punjab. After leading Kings XI Punjab for two years, there had been a lot of dilly-dallying over the off-spinner’s future in the KXIP set-up. Earlier, reports had emerged that the franchise owners wanted to change their captain and hence were looking to trade Ashwin to the Delhi Capitals.
However, franchise co-owner Ness Wadia cleared the air, asserting that the KXIP board had a rethink where they realized the value the off-spinner brings to the table, “The (KXIP) Board had a rethink and it realized that Ashwin is an integral part of the team. There were discussions with Delhi Capitals but those discussions never came to fruition. The way he plays his cricket and his performances speak for him,” Wadia told News 18.
However, it is still not clear whether Ashwin will lead the KXIP unit in the 13th edition of the IPL. Newly appointed coach and Director of Operations, Anil Kumble, when asked whether Ashwin will lead KXIP, he asserted that the management was yet to decide about the captain for the next season.
“I think any decision on Ashwin or any other player is an internal matter of the team. Ash (Ashwin) is a fantastic asset to the team. We all know his contributions to the Indian team over that last so many years. He has been a brilliant player for India. But there is no certainty yet that he’ll be the captain this year. Moving forward, we still haven’t taken any decision on anyone for that matter. We need to sit down with the (Kings XI) board.” Anil Kumble said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Fan asks Shreyas Iyer about Ashwin’s “trade” to DC
Meanwhile, one fan who was probably not aware of the latest development asked Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer whether Ashwin will play for his franchise in the next edition. Iyer was going to have none of the controversial stuff and in a straightforward manner, the DC skipper responded to the fan’s question, “Bapu tme suo kro Cho, Maine controversial question aavde nathi (it roughly translates to Bapu you are wasting time. I will not answer this controversial question),” said Iyer.
