I would not be surprised if they continue with MS Dhoni as captain for IPL 2021 also: Gautam Gambhir

MS Dhoni and his CSK had a terrible campaign in IPL 2020, where they failed to qualify for the first time into the playoffs. The team is currently placed at the bottom-most slot in the points table with eight losses in their 12 matches. Despite having an abysmal IPL season, MS Dhoni might be retained as the captain of the side for the IPL 2021 season also.

The fact being, MS Dhoni and owners of the yellow franchise share a great mutual trust and respect. The management of the team also has a lot of trust in his confidence and skills. So he might continue for the next year too. Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes all the facts mentioned above and opines, MSD enjoys a lot of freedom with the yellow army. He has been leading the side since the inaugural season of the extravagant league.

“I keep saying that why CSK is CSK is because of the relationship between the owners and the captain. They have given all the freedom to MS, and MS has received all the mutual respect from the owners as well. So I would not be surprised if they continue with MS and MS plays till the time he wants to play. And then next year, he still continues to be the captain and have a much different squad than what he has this time around. He deserves that much of appreciation from the owners,” said Gambhir as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The 39-year-old legendary skipper has already bid farewell to his international career earlier this year in August. All eyes were on him as he was set to lead the men in yellow and appeared in competitive cricket after a gap of 14 months. However, after CSK’s below-average performance this year, his form has come under a lot of questions again. But, Gambhir, who also flourished under his reign, has reminded people of the overall records of MSD as CSK skipper.

“What he has done for the franchise and how the franchise actually deals with MS and treats MS is a fabulous relationship. And that is how every franchise should deal with their captain, who has delivered for them,” Gambhir concluded.
