Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop has recounted a heart-warming story about West Indies and Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounder Rovman Powell. The senior player recalled that Powell had made a promise to his mother that he would take his family out of poverty when the all-rounder was in secondary school.

To note, the 28-year-old played an excellent knock of 33* in just 16 balls to help the Capitals to win a group stage encounter against the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 28 (Thursday). DC after winning yesterday’s encounter is now placed in the sixth spot.

A lot of people want him to succeed because they are aware of the hardships: Bishop on Powell

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the former pacer said, “If anyone has the opportunity of 10 minutes to spare, go and look at Rovman Powell’s life story – a video on YouTube. You will see why so many people, including me, are happy that this guy has gotten a taste of the IPL. He has come from humble beginnings. He promised his mom that he will take them out of poverty when he was still in secondary school. He is living that dream to do that. Great story.”

The former West Indies pacer also said that Powell has improved a lot which shows he possesses great temperament. “He averaged 47.5 against India with these same spinners in India last February. He has improved a lot, is very good against the seam, and shows a great temperament,” Bishop added.

Born on July 23, 1993, Powell lived along with his single mother and younger sister and a lot of hardships. However, his antics with the bat during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) earned him his national call up and was also bagged by DC during IPL 2022 mega auction. Talking about Powell’s T20I numbers, the right-handed batter has played 39 matches and has scored a total of 619 runs at an average of 24.76. He has also stroked three fifties and one hundred in the 20-over format.
