ICC announces qualification routes for upcoming marquee events

South Africa will host the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in January 2023.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has explained the qualification routes to the ICC T20 World Cups for both men and women’s competition in 2024 on Sunday (April 10). As far as the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 is concerned, 20 teams will participate, with 12 teams via the automatic qualification route, while the remaining eight teams will come through the global qualifiers.

The top eight teams in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in October will qualify, while West Indies and the USA will take two spots as the hosts. Apart from this, two teams will qualify as the next highest-ranked teams on the ICC Men’s T20 rankings table as of 14 November 2022.

If West Indies do make it to the top eight in the T20 World Cup 2022 standings, then one more team will be added to the qualification from the highest-ranked teams in ICC rankings as the third team. The remaining eight teams in the tournament will be decided through the regional qualification with Africa, Asia and Europe having two slots each to fill, while Americas and EAP will have one each.

South Africa to host inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup

As far as the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the top six teams from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 will automatically qualify including the hosts if they are not in the top six. In case South Africa finish in the top six of the 2023 event, then the next highest-ranked team(s) on the ICC Women’s T20 rankings table at a pre-determined date will qualify. The two remaining teams will be decided through the global qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup will be hosted by South Africa next year in January and it will feature 16 teams going on to play 41 games. South Africa will also be hosting the eighth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February 2023 with ten teams participating. Two teams will come through the qualifier stages and are yet to be decided.
