After the return of Test cricket earlier this month, the 50-over format is also set to resume with the ODI series between England and Ireland. The three-match contest will commence on July 30 at the bio-secure venue, Southampton. Ahead of the resumptions of ODIs, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has released the latest ODI rankings, and Indian players are dominating the top spots.

As expected, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the top of the batting rankings thanks to their consistent show in the format. India last played the ODIs in New Zealand, where they lost the series 3-0. Moreover, Rohit Sharma hasn’t played a 50-over encounter since the series against Australia at home in January. He got injured during the T20Is against New Zealand and was ruled out from the subsequent ODI and Test series.

The difference between Kohli (871) and Rohit (855) is 26 points, and the tussle between them to get to the top once India resumes their international cricket will be interesting to see. Pakistan’s newly appointed limited-overs skipper Babar Azam is at the third position with 829 points.

Jasprit Bumrah at the second place

Meanwhile, India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has retained his second place in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers. He is only three points behind Trent Boult, who has 722 rating points. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has pipped many big names to hold the third place in the list.

In terms of all-rounders, none of the Indian players is in the top five with Mohammad Nabi leading the charts. Ben Stokes, Imad Wasim, Colin de Grandhomme, and Chris Woakes follow him in the top five. However, the rankings are likely to be changed with the ODI series between England and Ireland commencing. Australia is also expected to tour England for three ODIs and as many T20Is.

With other teams not playing many matches, this is an excellent chance for England’s batsmen to climb up the ladder. The likes of Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy are on the brink of getting into the top 10.
