Day nine of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 saw the plate championships kick off. South Africa took on Ireland as New Zealand took on Scotland. A blitzkrieg from Kiwi opener Glenn Phillips saw New Zealand get past a hapless Scotland with considerable ease. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne’s half century saw South Africa pick up an easy win over Ireland thus rounding up a good day for the full membered nations.
Glenn Phillips puts Scotland to the sword
Winning the toss, Scotland skipper Neil Flack chose to bat first. What Flack failed to recognize was the slowness of the pitch. Left-arm fast bowler Ross ter Braak succeeded in extracting swing from the wicket as he picked up three wickets. Owais Shah top scored for the Scots with a well compiled 32 before being unfortunately run out by Glenn Phillips. In spite of batting all the 50 overs, the Scots managed to post a frugal total of 181. The New Zealand innings got off to a flier. Glenn Phillips showed no respite to the Scotland bowlers as he smashed them all round the park. His 89 that came off just 40 balls included 11 fours and 6 sixes. Skipper Josh Finnie finished off the match as the Kiwis picked up a 7 wicket win.
Brief Scores
Scotland 181/9 in 50 overs (Owais Shah 32, ter Braak 3/34)
New Zealand 185/3 in 27 overs (Phillips 89, Aslam 2/37)
South Africa pick-up easy win
The Proteas finally had some respite following a horrific tournament as they cruised to an 8 wicket win over the Ireland colts. Choosing to bat first, the Irish wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker held the innings together with a well-made 77. However, the lack of support from the other end saw Tucker’s unbeaten innings go in vain. The Proteas came into the innings for perhaps the first time in the tournament with a positive intent. Kyle Verreynne stole the show with a knock of 77. The South Africans therefore, cruised to victory by 8 wickets with 4 overs remaining.
Brief Scores
Ireland 185/7 in 50 overs (Tucker 77*, Galiem 2/22)
South Africa 187/2 in 46 overs (Verreynne 77, Dennison 1/27)
