ICC World Cup 2019: 2nd Semi-Final, Australia vs England – Best Memes from the Match

Unlike the first semi-final of the 2019 World Cup between New Zealand and India in Manchester, the second one turned out to be a rather one-sided affair. England rolled over the mighty Australians by eight wickets at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Subsequently, the Three Lions booked a berth for Finals Day on July 14 against Kane Williamson’s New Zealand at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

Smith guides the Aussies

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia didn’t have it easy and were bowled out for 223 in 49 overs. Jofra Archer pinned Aaron Finch for a golden duck after which Chris Woakes found David Warner’s outside edge. Woakes rattled Peter Handscomb’s woodwork to further jolt the Aussies. Alex Carey copped a blow on his chin by a deadly bouncer from Archer, but he kept playing with a bandage.

The southpaw stitched together a stand of 103 runs with Steve Smith (85) and pulled his team out of the pits. Carey fell prey to Adil Rashid after scoring 46. Smith got his half-century off 72 balls. He carried on until the 48th and it was a direct hit from Jos Buttler that led to his dismissal. Mitchell Starc contributed with a handy 29. For England, Woakes and Rashid were the most successful with three wickets each.

All too easy for the hosts

The run-chase turned out to be an absolute doddle for the Three Lions. Jason Roy (85) and Jonny Bairstow (34) were cautious to start. However, the duo pressed the accelerator as the inning progressed. The openers put on an opening-wicket stand of 124 runs off 17.2 overs. Starc, who ended up conceding 70 runs in nine runs, gave Australia the first breakthrough, getting rid of Bairstow.

A couple of overs later, Pat Cummins nipped out Roy as well. The batter didn’t touch the ball, but England had already exhausted their review and a dejected Roy had to walk back. At that point in time, the home team needed 77 runs off 30.2 overs and only a miracle could’ve saved Australia. Joe Root (49) and skipper Eoin Morgan (45) comfortably got their team over the finishing line with 17.5 overs to spare.
