ICC World Cup 2019: Andre Russell eager to smash sixes in the tournament

No one can doubt Andre Russell’s ability to change the course of the game with either his bat or the ball. Currently playing in the IPL 2019 for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the 30-year-old all-rounder has been hammering sixes at will in the tournament and has a strike rate of 209.27.

Russell has been named in the Windies’ 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 and has said that he is eager to set the tournament on fire with his six hitting abilities. The mega ICC event will start on Thursday, May 30 in England and Wales, and Russell is hoping to carry over his IPL form into the tournament, as he has slammed 406 runs in just 10 innings with 42 sixes and 23 fours to his name.

This is what the Jamaican six-hitting machine, who averages 28 in 52 ODIs and has taken 65 wickets, had to say about his preparations for the ICC event. He had last played an ODI for Windies in July of 2018 against Bangladesh and ever since has been playing T20 franchise leagues due to his troublesome knees not able to handle the workload of the 50-overs format.

“I took two injections to better my knee but it flared up and I was so upset. I was watching the games against England and couldn’t do anything about it. I wasn’t surprised to be a part of the World Cup squad. I’ve been doing well. I’ve been back and forth with the selectors and coaches back home. I wasn’t really focusing on the World Cup. I was just focusing on KKR, making sure that I did my best here,” Russell was quoted as saying by The Times of India (TOI).

The Caribbean team, captained by Jason Holder, will start their World Cup campaign against Pakistan on Friday, May 31 at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
