The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will begin on May 30 in England and Wales and five-time World Champions Australia will be defending their title which they won in 2015 at home. Currently, the team is embroiled in a five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE and have won the first two matches.
One big match player missing from the Australia side is Marcus Stoinis, the all-rounder who had featured in the ODI series against India recently. However, for Stoinis, the India tour also brought an unwanted hazard, as he broke his thumb on the right hand and missed one match against Pakistan. However, he is sure that the injury will not hamper his performance in the upcoming ICC World Cup.
Stoinis confident of playing in the World Cup despite injury
Stoinis has bowled eight overs across the two games and conceded 54 runs without picking up a wicket, and given that Australian top order has fired majorly in the series, hasn’t been required to bat. “I’m pretty happy it didn’t keep me out for too long,” he was quoted as saying by the ICC website.
“It was uncomfortable for a good couple of days. It’s just something I’m going to keep covered up while fielding. But it’s pulled up pretty well. After each game, it’s been okay. I think I’ll be over it by [the World Cup]. I think it should be completely healed within four weeks,” Stoinis added.
Stoinis is expected to join his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore at the end of Pakistan tour. If selected for the World Cup, Stoinis will have to attend a camp in Brisbane, before flying out to England for the mega ICC event.
“I’ll have my family come over to meet me in India, and then again, I’ll probably meet them in Brisbane in the World Cup prep. I might bring a couple of mates over for the World Cup, if I’m there, pending selection. For me, it’s about having people around, making sure I’m staying in contact with home. But it is a long stint,” Stoinis was quoted as saying.
