It was all carnage and butchery from the Australia batsmen when they took Bangladesh on. While David Warner led the charge with a massive hundred, the other players chipped in with handy contributions. The former Australian vice-captain scored 166 runs in the game from only 147 balls and was on fire. Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja registered half-centuries in the match and scored their runs at a decent pace.
It was Glenn Maxwell who provided the innings with a sudden pump as he got 32 runs from only 10 balls. Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey played nice little cameos towards the end as Australia finished with a score of 381/5. Of all the bowlers, it was Soumya Sarkar who was the best bowler for Bangladesh on the day with a three-wicket haul.
The chase was always going to be tough for Bangladesh. But they did it a few days ago and fans had the belief that they might be able to do it again. However, 382 is a massive ask and Bangladesh couldn’t get near despite trying their level best. Tamim Iqbal chipped in with a 62. Shakib couldn’t deliver a big knock and got out after scoring a good-looking 41.
Mushfiqur Rahim, along with Mahmudullah, tried putting up a fight back but it was a bit too much of an asking for him. While the latter got out on 69, the wicketkeeper-batsman remained unbeaten on 102 runs. However, Bangladesh still fell short of the target by 48 runs and tasted their third defeat of the tournament.
Here are the Australia Player Ratings for the match
David Warner – 9.5/10
Almost everything was perfect about this knock from David Warner. He was criticised for his slugging inning in the last game and the left-hander answered all his critics in style. At one stage tonight, every ball he touched with his bat seemed to go for a boundary. Warner would feel he missed out on a double hundred and got out when he was on 166. Though, he became the first player in the history of the World Cup to get two 150+ scores. This is his second century this World Cup and indeed a top-notch one.
Aaron Finch – 8/10
Aaron Finch continued with his good run in the tournament and got to another fifty in this match. But he couldn’t make it big and got out for 53. By playing aggressive cricket at the start, he eased the burden of Warner. Then, he inflicted a brilliant direct hit to send Soumya Sarkar back into the pavilion.
Usman Khawaja – 8/10
Usman Khawaja first played the second fiddle to Warner and rotated the strike well. Then, he took things under his own control and played a great knock. He kept finding the gaps in the field with ease and maintained the pressure from the other end as well. Khawaja, though, missed out on his hundred and got out to a part-time bowler when he was on 89. Moreover, he was involved in the run out of Glenn Maxwell as well and thus loses a few points.
Glenn Maxwell – 8/10
Glenn Maxwell had the situation set up for him when he came out to bat. The all-rounder had only a few overs left and needed to get going right from ball one. He put his power hitting ability and display and it was absolute carnage as long as he was there in the middle. In just 10 balls, he hit three sixes and two fours scoring 32 runs. Had he been in the middle for a little longer, Australia might have scored much more than 400 runs but was run out, unfortunately. In the hindsight, his knock made a massive difference as Bangladesh got quite close in the chase.
Marcus Stoinis – 7.5/10
Marcus Stoinis played a little cameo towards the end and hit a couple of boundaries in the final over. He remained unbeaten on 17 off 11 balls with the bat. With the ball, he went on to pick the most prized wicket of the opposition – Shakib Al Hasan. He bowled a few tight overs and was clinical with the ball. On the last ball of the innings, he dismissed Mashrafe Mortaza and finished with two wickets.
Steve Smith – 1/10
Steve Smith batted too way down the order for his liking in this game. Just of the second ball that he faced, Mustafizur Rahman trapped him plumb in front of the stumps. Even though it was clearly out, the former skipper decided to go for a review only to realise later that it was yet another brain fade moment.
Alex Carey – 2/10
Alex Carey couldn’t accelerate a great deal towards the end of the Australian innings. In 8 balls, he could only score 11 runs and hit one boundary. Australia also lost its review because of him. While the bowler didn’t seem to be much interested in an LBW call, Carey convinced the skipper to go for the review but the ball pitched outside the leg stump.
Nathan Coulter-Nile – 7.5/10
It was slightly surprising to see Australia bring Nathan Coulter-Nile into the playing eleven in place of Kane Richardson. While he hit good areas, it took a while for him to make a huge difference. It was in his final over where he dismissed both Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman thus opening his account. In his 10 overs, Nathan Coulter-Nile conceded 58 runs.
Pat Cummins – 3/10
Quite contrary to the usual, Pat Cummins was a tad expensive in this game. While he usually bowls tight lines and lengths, the Bangladesh batsmen seemed to have found a way to score runs off his bowling without taking too many risks. Despite bowling a maiden over, Cummins still went for 65 runs in his 10 overs and failed to pick up any wickets.
Mitchell Starc – 7.5/10
Mitchell Starc has had 14 consecutive innings in the World Cup where he picked up at least one wicket breaking the previous record held by Glenn McGrath (13). He was great in this game and cleaned up Tamim Iqbal just as he was setting his eyes on a big score. Towards the end of the innings, he even dismissed Mehidy Hasan and finished with figures of 10-0-55-2.
Adam Zampa – 5.5/10
Adam Zampa was roped into the playing eleven by Australia for this game but he was slightly expensive. The leg spinner trapped Liton Das LBW when he was batting on 20 runs. In his 9 overs, Zampa gave away 69 runs at an economy rate of 7.60.
