India’s contest versus Afghanistan was expected to be one-sided affair bearing in mind their form. But the Rose Bowl in Southampton was a witness to an absolute heart-racer as the Afghans gave the Men in Blue a run for their money. In the end, India held their nerve and got over the line by 11 runs courtesy of an incredible last over from Mohammed Shami. Meanwhile, the Afghans remain winless after six games.

Jadhav and Kohli guide India to respectability

The Afghans put up a spirited show as they restricted India to a rather modest score of 224 in 50 overs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck first blood, nipping out the in-form Rohit Sharma in the fifth over. KL Rahul played a horrendous reverse-sweep and gave Mohammad Nabi his first wicket after scoring 30. The onus was on Virat Kohli to steady the ship and he did that with a 63-ball 67 with the help of five fours.

Rahmat Shah got rid of Vijay Shankar, who scored 29. MS Dhoni tried to absorb the pressure with a patient 28 after which Rashid Khan pinned him, stumped by Ikram Ali Khil. Gulbadin Naib used 34 overs of spin and the ploy worked to a great extent for his team. However, with India in crisis, Kedar Jadhav came to the party and scored 52 with three fours and a six and that took the Men in Blue to the competitive score.

Nabi’s efforts go in vain

Hazratullah Zazai and Gulbadin Naib played out the first 6.3 overs whilst struggling for survival, that’s when Mohammed Shami pinned the former to give India the first breakthrough. Naib once again opening the innings played his strokes freely and got 27 off 42 before perishing to a rash-shot off Hardik Pandya. Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi staved off the bowling to keep the Afghans in the game. Jasprit Bumrah got rid of both in the 29th over while Shah scored 36, Shahidi could manage 21.

Yuzvendra Chahal castled the experienced Asghar Afghan to send half the Afghan side back to the hut. Najibullah Zadran hit a couple of fours in his 21 and got out to Pandya. With wickets falling and the required rate going up, Nabi had a massive task ahead of him.

The 34-year-old veteran notched a well-crafted half-century and finally bowed down to Shami in the last over with 16 runs needed of which he scored four. Shami also removed Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to become the second India bowler after Chetan Sharma with the hat-trick in the World Cup.
