Prior to their game against South Africa at Lord’s in London, Pakistan found themselves in a rabbit hole. But under pressure, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co delivered and defeated the Proteas by 49 runs. Moreover, they also knocked Faf du Plessis’ men out of the 2019 World Cup. With the thumping triumph, Pakistan hold on to their hopes of playing the semi-finals of the mega event.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s decision to bat first worked out well as they scored 308 in 50 overs. Fakhar Zaman (44) and Imam-ul-Haq (44) put on 81 for the first wicket to give their team the ascendancy. However, Imran Tahir pinned both the opening batsmen in quick succession. Aiden Markram turned out to be the man with the golden arm as he got rid of Mohammad Hafeez. Babar Azam showed maturity in the middle.

He notched a fifty off 61 balls and went to score 69 off 80 with seven fours. He was also involved in an 81-run stand with Haris Sohail, who played in place of Shoaib Malik. Harris didn’t die wondering and raced away to 89 off 59. His onslaught injected momentum into the Pakistan innings. Though Lungi Ngidi chipped in with a few late wickets, it couldn’t stop the Men in Green from posting a decent score.

South Africa out of the race

Mohammad Amir removed Hashim Amla to strike first blood and exert pressure on their batting. Thereafter, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis put their hands down for an 87-run stand. Meanwhile, the required rate climbed. De Kock got to 47 after which Shadab Khan picked up his prized scalp. Aiden Markram didn’t have much clue of the proceedings in the middle and he was castled by Shadab.

Du Plessis scored 63, but could never accelerate. Same was the case with Rassie van der Dussen, who crawled to a 47-ball 36. David Miller could only manage 31 off 37 despite playing with attacking intent. It all went downhill pretty quickly for the Proteas as wickets and the asking-rate caught them napping. Andile Phehlukwayo stayed unbeaten on 46, but couldn’t save the Proteas from being knocked out.
