Bangladesh got the better of Afghanistan rather comfortably in the end at The Rose Bowl in Southampton in the ongoing World Cup. With this win, the Tigers also stay alive in the World Cup and now are only one point adrift of England who are the fourth position in the points. The hosts play against Australia on Tuesday and all the Bangladesh supporters will be supporting the defending champions.

Coming back to the match, chasing the daunting total of 263 runs, Afghanistan got off to a brilliant start with their openers, Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah adding 48 runs off the first 10 overs. However, the tricky period started then with the spinners coming into the attack. The dot balls started to pile up and with it, the pressure also increased. Rahmat Shah was the first one to go trying to break the shackles.

The run-rate went down drastically as Shakib Al Hasan applied brakes amazingly on the run-scoring. At one stage, he had conceded only 10 runs picking four wickets after bowling seven overs. Afghanistan batsmen kept on losing wickets even as the required run-rate piled up.

Naib played a decent hand of 47 runs and Samiullah Shinwari also scored an unbeaten 49 but no other batsman contributed significantly to the total. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 200 after 47 overs as Shakib ended up with 5/29 to become only the second player in the history of the World Cup to score fifty runs and pick up a five-wicket haul after Yuvraj Singh.

Rahim and Shakib propel Bangladesh

Earlier, Afghanistan surprised everyone by opting to bowl first on a slow pitch after winning the toss. Bangladesh made a change at the top of the order by sending Liton Das along with Tamim Iqbal. The move, however, didn’t work. Mujeeb Ur Rahman sent back the former early. The man in the form of his life, Shakib Al Hasan, then walked out and stitched a decent stand with Tamim.

The duo added 59 runs for the second wicket before Tamim missed to read the line from Nabi and saw his stumps getting disturbed. Mushfiqur Rahim then joined hands with Shakib as they marched along at a good pace to keep the run-rate over five. However, Mujeeb’s second spell put a screeching halt to the run-scoring. He picked a crucial wicket of Shakib who had just got to his half-century and then also pinned Soumya Sarkar in front of the stumps to leave Bangladesh at 151/4 in the 32nd over.

But Rahim was determined as he churned out runs patiently first along with Mahmudullah and then with Mosaddek Hossain, to propel the team to a safe total of 262 runs after 50 overs. While Rahim scored 83 off 87 deliveries, Mosaddek’s 35 off 24 came at the perfect time for the Tigers. Eventually, the score proved to be too much for Afghanistan as they succumbed to their seventh loss of the tournament.
