Bangladesh strengthened their semi-final hopes with a convincing 62-run win against Afghanistan in Southampton. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 83 off only 87 balls on a slow track continuing from his unbeaten century against Australia. Shakib Al Hasan continued his sensational form with yet another fifty but his major contribution came with the ball. In the defence of their 262/7 total, Shakib bagged a 5-wicket haul at the cost of only 29 runs as Afghanistan collapsed to 200/10 from 48/0 at the end of 10th over.

A century of wins for the trio:

100 – This was Bangladesh’s 100th victory in International cricket with the trio of Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim in the playing XI. The three players together featured in 259 Internationals for the country. (72 wins in 157 ODIs, 19 wins in 54 T20Is and 9 wins in 48 Tests)


The firsts by Shakib in the World Cup:

1Shakib Al Hasan became the first player in the World Cup to score two centuries and claim two 4-wicket hauls. Shakib scored both his CWC centuries in the ongoing edition while the first of his two 4-fers in the competition came against New Zealand in 2015.


1 – Shakib is also the first in World Cups with two centuries and a five-wicket haul in the same edition. Kapil Dev in 1983 and Yuvraj Singh in 2011 scored one century and claimed a 5-fer apiece. Tillakaratne Dilshan scored two tons and bagged a 4-fer during the 2011 edition.

Shakib claims Bangladesh records:

3 – Shakib Al Hasan now has three Man of the Match awards in the World Cup; the most for a Bangladesh player. He received all the three awards in the ongoing edition. Only three players have won more than three player of the match awards in a single edition of World Cup.


10 – Shakib became the first player from Bangladesh to claim a 5-wicket haul in World Cup. This was his 10th haul of four or more wickets in ODI format; the most by any player for Bangladesh. Shakib went past Abdur Razzak’s nine four-wicket hauls in ODIs for Bangladesh.


Shakib @ 1000:

21 – Innings Shakib Al Hasan needed to complete 1000 ODI runs while batting at No.3; the joint 4th fewest for any player. Babar Azam needed only 16 innings while Sir Vivian Richards and Steve Smith required 19 innings apiece.

Calum MacLeod and Johnathan Trott also completed this milestone in 21 innings. Shakib’s current ODI average of 58.17 at this position is only behind Virat Kohli’s 63.29 among the players with 1000+ runs.


1016 – Shakib not only became the first player to score 1000 runs for Bangladesh in World Cup but also the first player with 1000+ runs and pick 30+ wickets in the CWC. His 33 wickets are the most by for any of the 19 players with 1000+ CWC runs bettering Sanath Jayasuriya who has 27 wickets.


Bangladesh’s most prolific pair:

3017 – The pair of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib became the first from Bangladesh with 3000 partnership runs in ODI cricket. The pair of Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah Riyad is only other to have over 2000 partnership runs for Bangladesh in ODIs. Mushfiqur-Mahmudullah pair completed 2000 partnership runs in ODIs during the game against Australia.
