Here we go then! A lot is hinging on this all-important encounter between England and India. The whole of Asia, not just Indians will be backing the Men in Blue with all the heart to get the better of the World Cup hosts. England losing this match will mean a realistic chance for Pakistan and Bangladesh to make it to the semi-final while Sri Lanka also stay alive in the tournament.
Eoin Morgan’s men have themselves to blame for this situation. They’ve failed to chase the total on three occasions so far but thankfully have their fortunes in their own hands. Jason Roy looks set to replace the underwhelming James Vince while Jofra Archer is also most likely to take the field. This is no less than a must-win match for the Brits as things will go out of their hands if they lose this game.
India, on the other hand, are sitting pretty at the second position in the points table and they will book their spot in the top four after winning this encounter. They have been ruthless, to say the least, so far and will be wary of England coming hard at them. No changes are expected in their playing XI.
The 38th match of the ICC World Cup 2019 will be played between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
The match starts at 10:30 AM local time (09:30 AM GMT) (3:00 PM IST).
The game will be live on Star Sports. Live streaming available on Hotstar.
Birmingham will be sunny to witness one of the most awaited clashes of this World Cup. There is no chance of the heavens opening up during the match. The temperature is expected to hover around 19-21 degrees Celsius according to AccuWeather.
Two matches of the tournament at the venue have witnessed scores less than 250 and both the clashes went down the wire. If a similar track is on offer then India will be at an advantage having played and won on such surfaces previously. If the first look of the pitch is considered, then it seems to be a flat wicket.
Average first innings score: 262 (Last six One-Day matches at the venue)
Record of chasing teams: Won – 4; Lost – 1; Tie – 1
Probable Playing XIs
Jason Roy/James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (C), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood.
Bench – Jason Roy/James Vince, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett.
KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (C), Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Bench – Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja.
Jason Roy batted in the nets on Friday and was said to be moving well. He will most probably be back in the XI but the final decision will be taken on Saturday.
Jofra Archer is struggling with a side strain and it restricted him while training. Even in his case, the final decision will be taken on Saturday.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also still recovering from the hamstring injury and will not play this game.
MS Dhoni vs England in ODIs:
Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:
Captain Options: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Joe Root
Vice-Captain Options: Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Hardik Pandya
Suggested Playing XI No.1 for Head to Head/Small Leagues:
Wicket-keeper – MS Dhoni
Batsmen – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (C), Kedar Jadhav, Joe Root (VC)
All-Rounders – Hardik Pandya, Ben Stokes
Bowlers – Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jofra Archer, Liam Plunkett
Suggested Playing XI No.2 for Grand/Mega Leagues:
Wicket-keeper – Jonny Bairstow, Rishabh Pant
Batsmen – Virat Kohli (C), KL Rahul, Joe Root
All-Rounders – Hardik Pandya, Ben Stokes (VC)
Bowlers – Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer.
If you want to include all of Kohli, Root and Rohit, will have to compromise on either Bumrah, Bairstow or Morgan won’t come. Also, two players with 8 credits are a must as well if you pick Archer or Chahal in the team.
It is tough to predict the winner of this game. India enter as the favourites based on current form.
