Windies signed off with only their 2nd win of the tournament as they edged past Afghanistan by 23 runs in Leeds. Shai Hope (77), Evin Lewis (58) and Nicholas Pooran (58) scored fifties while Jason Holder (45) and Shimron Hetmyer (39) made contributions as the Caribbean side finished with 311/6 in their 50 overs. Ikram Ali Khil (86) and Rahmat Shah (62) put Afghanistan on top as they were cruising at 180/2 after 33 overs. However, they kept losing wickets from this stage through poor shots only to be bundled out for 288 on the last ball of the innings.

A forgettable campaign for Afghanistan:

9 – Afghanistan lost as many as nine matches in this tournament; two more than any team in a single edition of World Cup. They are only the 3rd side to lose as many as nine games in a single ODI series/tournament.

Australia lost nine matches besides winning five during the 1981/82 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup while Sri Lanka also lost nine out of ten games they played in the 1985 edition of the same tournament.

12 – Afghanistan has lost 12 consecutive matches in the World Cup including their last three in the 2015 edition. Zimbabwe lost 18 in a row between 1983 and 1992 editions while Scotland lost all 14 CWC games they played thus far.

The new youngster in the ranks:

18y 278d – At the age of 18 years and 278 days, Ikram Ali Khil became the youngest wicket-keeper to score a fifty in ODI cricket. Mushfiqur Rahim was the previous youngest as he was 19 years and 246 days old when he scored 57 against Zimbabwe in the 2007 Harare ODI.

18y 278d – Ikram became the 3rd youngest player to score a fifty in World Cup. Tamim Iqbal was 17 years and 362 days when he scored 51 against India in 2007 while Mohammad Ashraful was 18 years and 234 days in the 2003 edition when he scored 56 against New Zealand.

86 – Ikram Ali Khil’s 86 in the highest individual score by a teenager in the World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar scored 84 against New Zealand in the 1992 edition at the age of 18 years and 323 days.

Pooran shines in his debut tournament:

367 – Nicholas Pooran’s 367 runs are the 3rd most number of runs scored in a World Cup edition for Windies. He is also the first Windies player to score 300+ runs in debut World Cup.

Sir Viv Richards scored 391 runs from six innings during the 1987 edition and 367 runs in 1983 tournament across seven innings. Ramnaresh Sarwan aggregated 375 runs in ten innings during the 2007 edition.

Yet another player in CWC 2019 for Afghanistan:

17 – As many as 17 players played at least one game for Afghanistan in this tournament. They are only the 4th team to use 17 or more players in a single edition of the World Cup. A total of 19 players featured in at least one game for Sri Lanka in 2015 CWC while Zimbabwe in 2003 and England in 2011 also used 17 players.

Afghanistan signs off with their best:

133 – The 133-run partnership between Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khil is the first-ever 100-run partnership in the World Cup for Afghanistan. Their previous highest was 94 by Asghar Afghan and Hashmatullah Shahidi for 4th wicket against England in Manchester earlier in the tournament.

288 – Afghanistan’s total of 288 in this game was their first 250+ total in the World Cup. Their previous highest CWC total was 247/8 against England at Old Trafford in reply to the home team’s 397/6.
