Should we call this an upset? Not at all! Bangladesh played like a team they belong to this level and have sent a warning to the other teams in this competition. The Tigers roared and roared big at the Kennington Oval in London on Sunday to defeat South Africa by 21 runs. First, they batted superbly to post a mammoth total of 330 on the board and then the bowlers did their job perfectly in the second innings to get the first points on the board.

After being put in to bat first, Soumya Sarkar took the attack to the much-famed South African bowlers. The left-hander rode his luck as well with some edges going through to the boundaries. Tamim Iqbal struggled a bit and was eventually dismissed by Andile Phehlukwayo in the ninth over. Sarkar too was sent back soon as the Proteas managed to make a comeback.

The veterans, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, then joined hands and rotated the strike to rebuild the innings. The duo made sure that there is no collapse on the way and mindfully kept the run-rate over six with timely boundaries. They added 142 runs for the third wicket and in the process, also slammed respective half-centuries. Just when both of them were looking good to notch up the first three-figure of this World Cup, Imran Tahir castled Shakib on 75.

The run-rate dipped a bit then and in an attempt of upping the ante Mohammad Mithun and Rahim both lost their wickets. Rahim played a brilliant knock of 78 off 80 deliveries but his team needed him at that stage. At 250/5, it seemed like the Tigers will end up a few runs short. But Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain provided the perfect flourish in the end.

Bangladesh went on to add 54 runs in the last four overs as they finished strongly on 330 runs for the loss of six wickets and they had a realistic chance at the halfway mark to get the better of South Africa.

South Africa fall short comprehensively

South Africa were under immense pressure in the chase and it was visible in their approach. Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock played their starts after taking their time early on. However, an ugly mix-up between the duo saw the latter getting out. Faf du Plessis then came out and played a fine hand even as Shakib castled Markram who, like his opening partner, couldn’t convert a start.

The onus was now on the skipper Du Plessis and Miller who added 45 runs to ignite the hope in the fans’ minds. Du Plessis also went past the 50-run mark in the meantime and looked ominous during his stay at the crease. However, Mehidy Hasan provided the much-needed breakthrough to his team by drawing the Proteas skipper forward and disturbed his stumps.

This proved to be the turning point in the game and despite a couple of blossoming partnerships, one always felt that Bangladesh were ahead. South Africa continued losing wickets at regular intervals and lacked that one big knock from one of the top-order batsmen only to finish 21 runs short of the target.

Bangladesh started their World Cup campaign on a high and should be credited for the brand of cricket they played on the day. South Africa next face India and have a lot of questions to answer now.
