South Africa would want to erase the memories of the World Cup opener after losing to England by 104 runs at the Kennington Oval in London. Barring half-centuries from Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock, the Proteas’ batting looked short of gas. Now at the same venue, Faf du Plessis and Co have the chance of making amends. They are now scheduled to play the Mashrafe Mortaza-led Bangladesh.

The Tigers, on the other hand, lost the only warm-up match they played against India. Moreover, a few of their players including their skipper are nursing injuries and that would be a matter of concern for them. Mashrafe’s men came into the mega event on the back of their maiden multi-nation victory in Ireland. However, the competition for them is expected to be higher than what they had in that series.

Weather Report

There is a minor chance of rain in the afternoon, but it won’t be detrimental. The atmosphere will be nice and cool with the temperature, hovering around 23 degrees Celsius. The humidity will be in the 40s and 50s. A significant amount of clouds will be there during the course of the encounter, however, won’t convert into a downpour.

Pitch Report

The pitch in the warm-ups produced runs and even in the first match, the hosts, England, were able to put 311 on the board. Nevertheless, the track has also assisted the fast bowlers to a large extent. As per previous records, the strip at the venue favours the team, batting second and teams may field first after winning the toss despite the result of the first game.

Playing combinations

South Africa

The Proteas may not press the panic button just yet following one loss. Hashim Amla copped a blow on the head but is fit to play. Du Plessis failed last time and he will be looking to score big. Van der Dussen carrying on with his form will also be crucial. David Miller is likely to be benched again.

Phehlukwayo, Rabada and Ngidi form the fast bowling unit. Imran Tahir is the lone spin-bowling option in the lineup. There’s no news on whether Dale Steyn is fit enough to play the next game as he is recovering from a shoulder injury that he suffered during the 2019 IPL in India.

Probable XI

Quinton de Kock (WK), Hashim Amla, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir

Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal has a wrist injury and it’s not clear whether he’ll play tomorrow or not. If he gets in, then the axe may come down on Mohammad Mithun, who got out on a duck against India. Liton Das may retain his place after his 73 in the same encounter. The Tigers also have the option of persisting with Rubel Hossain and benching Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Mosaddek Hossain is likely to get the nod ahead of Sabbir Rahman.

A determined Mashrafe will play the contest in spite of having a hamstring injury. Mohammad Saifuddin has a back injury and is expected to take pain-killers in order to make himself available for the game. Mustafizur Rahman also has a calf injury. Mahmudullah has problems on his shoulder and he isn’t a bowling option at least for now.

Probable XI

Tamim Iqbal/Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Mashrafe Mortaza (C), Mohammad Saifuddin, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman

Probable Top Performer

Hashim Amla – South Africa | Soumya Sarkar – Bangladesh
