New Zealand have beaten Bangladesh in a thriller of an encounter in the match 9 of the ongoing World Cup. Defending a moderate total of 244 runs, Bangladesh showed great heart to take things down to the wire and almost won the game. But Mitchell Santner kept his cool which the likes of Colin de Grandhomme and James Neesham should’ve been done and helped the team get over the line in a tense finish.

Chasing 245, Martin Guptill and Colin Munro provided a brisk start to the team by adding 35 runs in just five overs. However, the champion bowler Shakib Al Hasan came to the fore for his team sending back both of them and reduce New Zealand to 55/2 in the 10th over. Soon, the Kiwis would’ve been three down only if Mushfiqur Rahim had been aware a little bit. Kane Williamson was way short of his crease while taking a single.

But the replays confirmed that Rahim had dislodged the bails earlier with his arm before collecting the ball and Williamson got a life at this stage. From here on, the Kiwi skipper and Ross Taylor stitched a vital stand of 105 runs as both of them notched up their respective half-centuries. Williamson threw his wicket away off Mehidy Hasan in the 32nd over and this is where things started to change. Tom Latham followed him soon back to the dressing room to leave the team at 162/4.

However, the killer blow was of Ross Taylor who got out for 82 with the team still needing 53 runs Bangladesh were fighting it out for every run and in the process, they picked up a couple more wickets to make New Zealand nervous. It all came down to Mitchell Santner in the end and the left-hander kept his composure, thanks to some edges which went for four, to win the game for his team in the end by just two wickets.

Henry runs through Bangladesh

Earlier in the day, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first in overcast conditions. But the Bangladesh openers Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal played cautiously upfront to deny an early wicket to the opposition. Matt Henry though breached Sarkar’s defence in the 9th over after which Lockie Ferguson’s pace undid Tamim.

This followed a decent partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan which was broken due to the duo’s mistake itself. Rahim got run-out in an ugly mix-up and from there on, Bangladesh kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and could never gain any momentum. Shakib batted well to score 64 runs but none of the other batsmen could cross the 30-run mark which cost the Tigers.

Henry returned with the figures of 4/47 as Bangladesh were bundled out for 244 runs in the final over of the innings. They would be ruing now a few lost opportunities but the Tigers showed extreme resilience to stay in the hunt while defending a below-par total. However, the Kiwis kept their nerves to register their second win in as many matches.
