Ravichandran Ashwin is regarded as one of the finest spinners ever and his numbers speak volumes of his prowess. Be it restricting runs in white-ball cricket or taking regular wickets in Test matches, the Tamil Nadu-born bowler has rose to every challenge which came his way. During the recently-concluded Test series against New Zealand, the offie also became India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests, going past Harbhajan Singh’s tally of 417 scalps.

With Ashwin being 35 and ageing like fine wine, the cricket world is intrigued to see where the star bowler will finish. Many even back him to go past Muttiah Muralitharan’s tally of 800 Test wickets and become the highest wicket-taker in the purest format. While only time would give this answer, Iceland cricket came up with an interesting viewpoint on Ashwin’s success.

Context and luck is everything in life: Iceland Cricket

The official Twitter page of the cricket association suggested that if the likes of Ashwin and legendary Australian batter Don Bradman, who averages just below 100 in Test cricket, may not have achieved the same milestones had they been born in an unpopular cricketing nation.  The post left the fans intrigued as the comment section got flooded in no time.

The post claimed that if Ashwin was born in Sri Lanka, who is known to produce great spinners, he may have achieved as many wickets as legendary Muttiah Muralitharan. On the other hand, Bradman might not have been to play international cricket had he was born in Iceland. Instead, he would have been a fisherman.

“Context and luck is everything in life. If Ravi Ashwin had been born in Sri Lanka, he would probably end his career with as many wickets as Muralitharan. If Don Bradman had been born in Iceland, he’d have scored no international runs and been a below par fisherman. That’s life,” posted Iceland cricket.

Meanwhile, Ashwin is currently in South Africa for a three-match Test series. As tracks in the rainbow nation aren’t known to offer much assistance to spinners, Ashwin has a stern task at hands and it would be interesting to see how he embraces this challenge.
