If Kevin Pietersen had Michael Vaughan as his captain, he would've played longer for England: Geoffrey Boycott

Kevin Pietersen is still regarded as one of the best cricketers to have played for England. But his tussle with the board and the players led to his career ending on a controversial note. His last game for England was the New year Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney in January 2014. A great career was halted abruptly after just 104 Tests and 136 ODIs when Pietersen had the ability to become the best ever to play for England.

Former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott also reckons the same. Rather he feels that if Pietersen had played under Michael Vaughan throughout his career, then the former would’ve played more. The South Africa-born cricketer made his international debut during the memorable 2005 Ashes series when Vaughan was leading England.

It all started with Boycott wishing Kevin Pietersen on his 40th birthday on June 27 where he also stated that the latter’s 186 against India in 2012 on a square-turner at the Wankhede was his best innings. “Happy 40th Birthday one of the best innings I ever saw by anybody was you in Mumbai, 2nd Test v India in 2012. 186 on a big turning pitch and after that @englandcricket won easily. Magic,” the 79-year-old had tweeted.

Kevin Pietersen would’ve had less strife with ECB too, feesl Boycott

Replying to his tweet, one of the fans wrote that Kevin Pietersen would’ve broken a lot of records if he had listened to Boycott during his career. Boycott came across this tweet and in reply to it said that Vaughan should’ve been the 40-year-old’s captain for his better career. He also felt that Pietersen’s relations with the ECB would’ve been better in that case as well.

“If @KP24 had @MichaelVaughan as his captain all his career he would have played a lot longer and better with less strife for @englandcricket,” he wrote in his tweet.

For the unversed, Kevin Pietersen was not on good terms during his playing career especially due to his insistence to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was the first England player to feature in the cash-rich league despite ECB not allowing its players to play in the T20 League.
