'I’m hoping this is all a bad dream' - Andrew Symonds last Instagram post was for late Shane Warne

Cricket fans woke up to a disastrous piece of news on Sunday (May 15) as former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds passed away in a car accident. The unfortunate incident took place in the outskirts of the city of Townsville. Symonds was severely injured in the car crash and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. Needless to mention, the news sent the cricket world in dismay and condolences poured in from different corners.

Meanwhile, Symonds isn’t the first Australian great to breathe his last in 2022. Earlier this year, Rod Marsh and Shane Warne had also passed away. Hence, it was yet another massive loss for the Australian cricket fraternity. Interestingly, Symonds’ last post on Instagram was a tribute for Warne.

“Devastated, I’m hoping this is all a bad dream I just can’t get my head around never seeing you again. Love to all the Warne family I’m speechless,” Symonds had written on Instagram in March. As Symonds joined Warne in the other world, veteran Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon recalled a heartbreaking conversation with the all-rounder during Warne’s memorial service.

“I am heartbroken by the news we all woke up too this morning. It was only 2 months ago at Warnie’s memorial service, Roy and I had a good chat and both agreed it was to young to leave us now this! RIP mate, a true legend of the game we love and inspiration to so many! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, kids and friends,” wrote Lyon.

Meanwhile, Symonds was nothing but a nemesis for the opposition during his playing days. The dasher used to attack bowlers from the outset and his ability to stay at the crease for long made him even more lethal. Owing to the same, he earned a substantial amount of success in Test cricket as well. Not to forget, he was also a handy bowler alongside being a gun fielder.

Riding on his brilliance, the Aussies recorded several memorable triumphs. He even played an instrumental role in Australia’s 2003 and 2007 World Cup triumphs. With Symonds being such a prominent figure in the cricket world, his demise at the age of 46 broke many hearts.
