Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony has been the much-debated topic in India over the last few weeks. He came out with flying colours in the General Elections in Pakistan for his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and had also invited three former Indian cricketers for the event. While Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev denied travelling to Pakistan citing personal reasons, Navjot Sidhu visited the neighbouring country respecting his former cricketing rival’s invitation.

The dignitaries in Pakistan were overwhelmed with Sidhu for trying to spread peace between the two countries who have more often than not crossed swords in the last few years. Even the Indian cricketer-turned-politician went on to say that he has brought the message of love from India to Pakistan. However, many people including the politicians in India were not at all impressed with Sidhu’s actions and fumed at him.

Imran Khan has officially taken over as the Prime Minister of Pakistan now after the swearing-in ceremony took place on August 17. Navjot Sidhu was the only Indian cricketer to attend the event as he also gifted a Kashmiri Shawl to him. The former Pakistan cricketer and the World Cup-winning captain has thanked Sidhu for his gesture and also termed that the people criticising him doesn’t want peace in the sub-continent.

“I want to thank Sidhu for coming to Pakistan for my oath taking. He was an ambassador of peace & was given amazing love & affection by ppl of Pakistan. Those in India who targeted him are doing a gt disservice to peace in the subcontinent – without peace our ppl cannot progress,” his tweet read.

Many cricketers also congratulated Imran as he took oath as the PM of his country and hoped that he works towards the betterment of Pakistan as he had promised to the people during his speeches ahead of the elections.
