Ravichandran Ashwin did not know that he was cleaned up by Ajaz Patel. Patel bowled a delivery that spun away from Ashwin and shattered his stumps. The wicket-keeper incidentally caught the ball after it was deflected off the stumps, and started celebrating.

Ashwin was totally unaware that he was bowled. Ashwin immediately reviewed the decision, thinking he was given out ‘caught behind’ and the replays confirmed that the veteran was clean bowled. The right-hander departed for a first-ball duck.

Mayank Agarwal and Axar Patel steady the Indian ship on Day 2

India lost 2 quick wickets on the morning of Day 2. Wriddhiman Saha was the first man to walk back to the pavilion. Saha was struck plumb in front of the stumps by a delivery that pitched and went on with the arm, bowled by Ajaz Patel. Saha did not pick it at all and walked back for 27.

Patel then scalped Ashwin’s wicket off the very next delivery. But then, that was the end of the joy for New Zealand in the morning session. Opener Mayank Agarwal, who has batted in superb fashion both on Day 1 and Day 2, combined with Axar Patel and forged a partnership of 67 runs, and the Indian scorecard currently reads 310/7.

While Agarwal was dismissed for 150, Patel has contributed a valuable 51* off 117 deliveries. It has been a complete monopoly as far as New Zealand are concerned with the ball. One man, Ajaz Patel has scalped all 7 Indian wickets to fall in the 1st innings of the 2nd Test match.

Earlier on Day 1, Patel had cleaned up Cheteshwar Pujara with an absolute peach of a delivery, while Virat Kohli was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Patel, albeit in controversial circumstances. Both batters were dismissed without troubling the scorers.
