When Rohit Sharma walked out onto the park in India’s third T20I against Sri Lanka, the talismanic cricketer scripted a whole new record. That of being the most capped T20I player in the world. He played his 125th T20I thus overtaking the second-placed Shoaib Malik who has played 124 T20I games for Pakistan. Mohammad Hafeez comes third on the list having played 119 T20Is in his career for Pakistan. In terms of Indians who have played more than 100 T20Is, Sharma is the only player to have achieved the feat. Behind him is former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who have played 98 and 97 T20 internationals respectively.

The Mumbai-born cricketer made his T20I debut at the 2007 T20 World Cup held in South Africa. He impressed immediately by contributing to the team that went on to win trophies under Dhoni. Rohit has since scored 3308 runs at an average of close to 33. He has gone about his business at an impressive strike rate closing in on 140 with 26 half-centuries and four centuries to his name. The elegant batter has a high score of 118 in the T20I format.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest white-ball players: Sunil Gavaskar lauds Rohit Sharma

Heaping praise on Sharma’s milestone was legendary Indian Cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar. The former Indian cricketer went on to say that the batter will go down as one of the greatest white ball cricketers the game has seen.

“Without a doubt, one of the greatest white-ball players. Look at his performance as a batter and as a captain. Look at the way, he has changed the fortunes of whichever team he has played for. He will definitely go down as one of the greatest white-ball players. In the last World Cup, he hit 5 hundreds. He will go down as one of the greatest white-ball players ever,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

The recently appointed all format Indian captain is in stellar form as a skipper having whitewashed the West Indies in a T20I series and is now on the brink of repeating it against Sri Lanka.
