Team India has earned the bragging rights already, even before they meet Pakistan in the opening encounter of Champions Trophy 2017 on June 4. How? Because India beat Pakistan in the fans warm-up game! The event, which was scheduled to take place at Attock Cricket Club, was moved indoors to the Edgbaston Cricket Centre after heavy rain. Two eight-over games were played, and they ended with one win per side, after which a Super Over was called to decide the winner with India winning by four runs.

The fans trophy

The event was a partnership event between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Warwickshire County Cricket the National Asian Cricket Council (NACC) and Attock Cricket Club. The sole purpose of organising a match between fans was to deepen the ties between Birmingham’s South Asian communities.

“Whilst there is a great rivalry between both teams, tonight’s games were played in the true spirit of cricket, which highlighted just how sport can bring together people of all backgrounds and beliefs,” Neil Snowball, Warwickshire’s chief executive was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The game generated decent crowd attendance

The fans trophy wanted to engage with fans who follow India and Pakistan around the world on the cricket field. The games generated a lot of excitement and experience of playing under pressure was also amazing for the players.

“South Asian engagement is a key focus for the ECB over the next few years and we are keen align with the participants that play, attend and follow. Tonight has been a great showcase for these competitions with some great cricket on show for the spectators in attendance,” he stated.

As for the real battle between the arch-rivals, the fans will have to wait until the 4th of June to soak themselves in excitement and thrill. Since the England pitches are batting-friendly, one can expect a high scoring affair.
