Though India started their latest tour of Australia with a loss as they went down to the hosts by four runs in the first T20I, experts believe that the outfit led by Virat Kohli has it in it to rewrite history on this tour. India will be playing Australia in a four-match Test series after the T20Is and for observers, this is the best opportunity for India, currently ranked No.1 in Tests, to win a series Down Under – something they are yet to do.
The first Test starts in Adelaide on December 6 and will be followed by games in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. India’s best performance in Australia in Tests have been draws on three occasions (1980-81, 1985-86 and 2003-04) while they lost the series 2-3 in 1977-78. India last won a Test match in Australia in 2008 when they beat the hosts by 72 runs in Perth.
India in great form, says Michael Clarke
One of the experts who feel India have their best chance to win a series in Australia is the former captain of the Baggy Greens, Michael Clarke. The 37-year-old who led Australia on a number of Test battles with India and was also at the helm in the series in 2011-12 which Australia won 4-0 at home, in an exclusive interview to Times of India said: “Both teams are looking to in but India is in some great form and in my opinion, its India’s first opportunity to dominate Australia in their own backyard.”
“This is a huge chance or Virat Kohli and team to win for the first time in Australia,” he added. It was against the Indians in the 2011-12 series that Clarke had amassed 626 runs that included 329 not out in Sydney and ended up as the man of the series.
India though haven’t done well in their previous two high-profile overseas Test series this year. They lost to South Africa 1-2 while were humiliated by England 1-4. Captain Kohli excelled with the bat in both the series but as a team, India failed to impress. They would also be eager to make amends in this tour.
Australia, ranked fifth in Tests at the moment, will be without the service of their two premier batsmen and leaders Steve Smith and David Warner in the series.
