Australian legend Glenn McGrath has been the part of the world beating Australian side of the 2000’s which reigned supreme over the cricketing world. The new age Australian team has also established themselves in terms of achievements in the Tests and 50 over format. However, T20 is a format in which Australia yet to reign. McGrath, who is currently in Chennai to train the pacers at the MRF Pace Foundation, spoke about Australia’s chances in the forthcoming T20 World Cup, the batting friendly wickets, new Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah, and a lot more.
The Aussies have been five times champions in the 50 overs format and dominated the Test arena consistently. However, the only honors they have been eluded so far is the T20 World Cup.
McGrath gave his view about Australia’s chances in the upcoming World T20 “It can happen anytime as Australia take their T20 games very seriously. Australia generally play well in Indian conditions and I am sure they’ll play with a lot confidence this time.”
However, he feels that It would the home team who will be the favorites to win the World T20.
“India are the favourites. They play the format very well and with the conditions favourable to them, they can go all the way.”
The T20 format does not allow the bowler to breathe easy with the game becoming more batsman friendly. However, bowlers have made a remarkable change and have to develop themselves to thrive in the modern game. The legendary bowler also states this fact.
“There has been a remarkable change in the way the bowlers are looking to go about their job nowadays. The bowlers have learnt to have better control and the margin of error has reduced.”
Director of coaching at the MRF Foundation, McGrath also feels that yorker will play a great role in upcoming ICC World T20. He also described the perfect yorker.
“A perfect yorker is the one that hits the bottom of the bat and the ground at the same time. You need control to execute the delivery. It’s a wicket-taking delivery.
McGrath said that he has seen fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled some wonderful yorkers against the Aussies recently.
Yes, I feel that the batsmen will keep facing difficulties in handling Bumrah if he consistently bowls those yorkers. He has got an unusual action and batsmen will need time to adjust to it. Bumrah trained here two years back and has improved a lot as a bowler,” McGrath said applauding the youngster.
McGrath also commented on the nature of wickets in Australia, particularly WACA, Perth which has turned batter friendly and provides less assistance to the bowlers. He now feels that he can come out and bat easily on the Perth strip where batsmen used to dread facing fast bowlers in the past.
“It has been an issue for some time now. Wickets are being prepared to help the batsmen, which I think needs to change. There has to be something for the bowlers to make it an even contest. I personally liked the Adelaide pitch in the inaugural day-night Test match which had a tinge of grass on it. The way the wicket has changed in Perth, I would now love to come and bat on it (laughs).
