India have already sealed the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand after three matches. The visitors have rested Virat Kohli for the rest of the tour and the selectors haven’t named the replacement for him. There is a possibility of Shubman Gill getting a game in place of Kohli and the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly also feels that the youngster should get a chance.
Kohli also rated him highly after the third ODI in the post-match presentation saying that the talent Gill possesses at the age of 19 is immense and even he himself didn’t bat like that. This comment has more or less assured Shubman Gill an ODI debut in one of the two ODIs against New Zealand.
“I saw him bat in the nets and I was like wow I was not even ten per cent of that when I was 19,” Kohli said on Monday after the match.
Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly has also backed Shubman Gill’s inclusion in the team for the remainder of the series and feels that the youngster should be tried out before the World Cup. The selectors have also cleared that they are looking at him as a reserve opener for the mega event and a good performance would definitely seal his place. KL Rahul was seen as a backup opener all this while but his miserable form has opened up a place for Gill.
“I think they should play Shubman Gill. He certainly deserves a chance in the team. He should play the rest of the series. Who knows, India might get another good player for the World Cup. Virat Kohli has also said that he didn’t bat like Gill when he was his age, which is a great thing to say for a captain,” Ganguly said while speaking to India Today.
With Rohit Sharma at the helm now, it remains to be seen if Gill will get a chance and who will be left out for him at the Seddon Park in Hamilton where the next match is set to be played.
