India v England, 1st Test, Day 5 – Statistical Highlights

The first Test match between India and England eventually ended in a draw but not before seeing a few hiccups by the hosts on the final day. England declared their innings at 260/3 after Alastair Cook scored a century. India needed 310 runs in 49 overs but were found themselves in a position of 132/6 with about 30 minutes of play remaining. However, Kohli and Jadeja added 40 runs in 10 overs before Cook agreed for a draw with Kohli unbeaten on 49 in the final over. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

1 – India lost only 1 Test at home after losing the toss since 2006. Prior to this, India won on the last 5 occasions where they lost toss at home.

1 – Virat Kohli is now the first Indian captain to be unbeaten 1-run short of a milestone (49*, 99*, 149*, and so on) in Test cricket. In fact, he is the first captain in overall to be unbeaten on 49 in 4th innings of a Test.

2 – Virat Kohli is only the 2nd Indian to remain unbeaten on 49 in Test. Brijesh Patel was unbeaten on 49 at end of India’s chase against West Indies in 1976.

3 – Number of the man of the match awards Moeen Ali has in last 12 months in Test cricket, 2nd most for any player in this period. Ravi Ashwin has 4 match awards.

3 – Haseeb Hameed became only the 3rd player to hit a Four, Five and Six in same innings on Test debut. (Where known) Hameed along with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have hit a 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 on Test debut but missed out on taking a three. West Indies’ Dave Joseph in 1999 scored a one, two, three, four, five and six on his Test debut across both the innings.

3/133 – Ravindra Jadeja’s figures of 3/133 in this game are the best match figures for an Indian in this Test. This is the worst best match figures for a bowler in a home Test since ML Jaisimha’s match figures of 2/54, which were best for an Indian in 1964 Test vs England at Kanpur. (Min: 200 overs)

5 – Number of centuries Alastair Cook has scored in India, the most by any visiting player in Tests in India. Weekes, Clive Lloyd and Hashim Amla have scored 4 each in India.

5 – For the 5th time Alastair Cook has scored 1000 runs in a calendar year, joint 2nd most by any player. Sachin Tendulkar scored 1000+ runs in 6 different years.

6 – Number of centuries in this game. Rajkot’s Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium is now the first venue to witness 6 individual centuries in its first Test match. Previously, 5 centuries have been scored at 4 different venues hosting its first Test.

9 – Number of centuries Alastair Cook has scored in Asia, the most by a non-Asian player in Tests in Asia. He went past Jacques Kallis who scored 8 centuries in Asia.

12 – Number of centuries Alastair Cook has scored in 3rd innings of a Test match, joint most by any player. Kumar Sangakkara also scored 12 centuries in 3rd innings.

82 – Haseeb Hameed’s 82 is this Test is the highest score by an England teenager in Tests. Jack Crawford’s 74 vs South Africa in 1906 is the previous highest by an England teenager in Tests.

449.3 – Number of overs bowled in this Test, the most in a venue’s first match since 1992. In Harare’s first ever Test match in 1992, 450 overs were bowled between India and Zimbabwe.

65.27 – Virat Kohli’s batting average of 65.27 in 4th innings in Test cricket is the 2nd best after Don Bradman’s 73.40. (Min: 15 innings)

180 – Cook-Hameed’s 180 run stand is the 2nd highest opening stand in a team’s 2nd innings of a Test match in India. Highest is Sehwag-Gambhir’s 182-run stand vs Australia at Mohali in 2008.

195 – Runs conceded by Ravi Ashwin between Ben Duckett’s wicket in the first innings and Alastair Cook’s wicket in 2nd innings, the most he has conceded between his two wickets in Test cricket.

230 – Runs conceded by Ravi Ashwin in this Test, the most he has conceded in a home Test. He conceded 225 runs against New Zealand at Kanpur recently but he picked up 10 wickets.

1017 – Runs scored by Alastair Cook in India in Test cricket. He became the 4th visiting player to score 1000+ runs in Tests in India.

1976 – Last time a Test match in India seen more than 449.3 overs in this Test was in 1976 between India and New Zealand where 479.5 overs were bowled.

2012 – Last time before this Test, a Test match in India ended in a draw was also between India and England in 2012 at Nagpur. (Excluding Bangalore Test in 2015 where only one day’s play was possible.)
