Parthiv Patel smashed his way to an entertaining 54 ball 67 runs knock to guide India to a simple eight-wicket win the in the third Test at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Needing only 103 runs to win, the hosts did not face much trouble and mopped off the target in just 20.2 overs with help of Parthiv’s blazing knock studded with 11 fours and 1 hit over the fence.

Earlier, Shami rattled the tail and wrapped up England quickly before the tea session. Joe Root and Haseeb Hameed defiance were of no use.  Root continued to lead from the front and went to complete a half century. Hameed, on the other hand, won everyone’s heart, with his brave 59 runs batting at No. 8, below Jos Buttler while nursing the finger injury.

It did not take long for India to make their first breakthrough in the morning session as Jadeja grabbed night watchman Gareth Batty’s wicket off the second ball of the day by bringing him forward and trapping him lbw.

Root and Buttler showed some intent, but their partnership could not flourish and could add only 29 runs for the 6th wicket. Haseeb Buttler looked on a counter attacking streak got 19 quick runs before his approach brought his fall in the 47th over.

Haseeb was then sent in next and the right-hander looked in no hurry, getting off the mark only off the 18th delivery. His strike rate at once was under 20 runs. Root enjoyed his company and by lunch session, the duo had added 45 for the 7th wicket and had finally erased the deficit.

The Yorkshire man, however, was unable to go further than 78 and lost his wicket after Ajinkya Rahane held a stunning reflex catch at slip off Jadeja’ bowling. It was the match – turning breakthrough from India’s point of view. Given the fact how Hameed and Woakes batted, later on, England would have put up a bigger target in front of the hosts, if not completely challenging.

Hameed continued to frustrate the opposition and brought up his fifty off 147 deliveries. His knock deserves all the appreciation. Hameed showed maturity when required. After Woakes’s departure, he shielded Rashid and Anderson to stretch England’s score from 195/8 to 236. To speak about his brilliance, Hameed made 36 batting along with the tail-enders who could not make any contribution as Rashid was undone for a two-ball duck while Anderson ran himself out for 5. The teenager had already gained an immense reputation for his matured approach but with this knock, he has earned a lot of respect and placed an example of his mental toughness.

Woakes also played perfect partner to the youngster and defied the Indians forcing Kohli to make constant changes in the bowling attack. Finally, it was an idea to bring in Mohammad Shami into the attack which brought the breakthrough and eventually put an end to the England innings also.

The right armer tested Woakes with short pitched stuff before getting him out in the same fashion. The first ball of the 84 over from Shami saw the fast bowler test Woakes’ mettle with a bouncer which the right-hander failed to deal with and inflict a blow. It took few second for him to get back to the batting stance before Shami took the mental benefit and banged another shorter one to get him caught at deep fine leg. Call it pre-planned or situational, Shami did a fantastic job to get under the skin of the batsman. Hameed then displayed an one-man effort and added 41 runs for the last two wickets before the last two men – Rashid and Anderson – departed, leaving him stranded.
