Things didn’t happen as expected on the opening day for spinners after England won the toss on a dry track which was expected to produce huge turn, but India managed to get 8 wickets with England scoring 268 runs at stumps. India picked up 4 wickets in the opening session reducing them to 92/4 before Jonny Bairstow continued his golden run with the bat to rescue his side by putting on crucial fifty stands with Stokes and Buttler. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

2 – Parthiv Patel became the 2nd player to miss 40 or more games for his side on two different occasions. He missed 43 matches between 2004 and 2008. He missed 83 matches since getting dropped in 2008.

2 – Karun Nair became the 287th player to represent India in Tests. He is the 2nd Indian to make his debut in the ongoing series. Last time India had two debutants in a series was in the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia in 2014.

3 – Mohali’s IS Bindra PCA Stadium became the 3rd Indian venue to host a T20I, an ODI and a Test in same calendar year. Kolkata in 2011 and Vizag in 2016 are the other two.

4 – Number of wickets India picked up in the first session, the joint most they have picked in the opening session of a home Test since 2000. They picked 4 wickets in the opening session of Test vs Australia at Hyderabad in 2013.

6 – Number of times Alastair Cook got out to Ravichandran Ashwin in Tests, the most times he got out to any spinner in this format. Nathan Lyon got Cook on 5 occasions.

6 – Number of players including Moeen Ali today batted at No.4 for England in 2016 in Tests. Last time they had as many as 6 players in a calendar year batting at No.4 in Tests was in 2009.

10 – Number of fifty plus scores Jonny Bairstow has scored in 2016 in Tests as a wicket-keeper, the most by any keeper in a calendar year. AB de Villiers had 9 fifty plus scores in 2013.

15 – Number of fifty-plus stands England had for the 6th wicket in Tests in 2016, the joint most by a team for a single wicket in a calendar year. Australia also had 15 fifty plus scores for 2nd wicket in 2005.

20 – Virat Kohli has lead in 20 Tests without taking the field without same XI in consecutive Tests. Only 3 captains went through without fielding in the same XI in consecutive Tests for more games.

89 – Runs scored by Jonny Bairstow in first innings, the 3rd highest individual score by an England keeper in Tests in India. Highest is 92 by D Spooner in 1951 at Kolkata.

400 – Parthiv Patel completed 400 catches in first-class cricket with Alastair Cook’s dismissal.

829 – Partnership runs between Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes in Tests in 2016, most by any pair. Next best is 750 runs by Cook and Hales pair.

1828 – Partnership runs added by England for the 6th wicket in Tests in 2016, the 2nd most by a team for a single wicket in a calendar year. Pakistan added 2341 runs for 3rd wicket in 2006.

2012 – Parthiv Patel’s last dismissal as a keeper came in 2012 off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling. His first after comeback today also came in Ashwin’s bowling.
