India finished the Test series on high with an innings win at Chepauk after a dramatic 5th day bowling out England to just 207. After a wicketless first session, Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets and a stunning catch to put England 4 down at Tea. In the final session, Jadeja played a crucial role once again by taking out the set batsmen and clearing the way for his side. He finished with 7 wickets in the innings. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian to receive a Man of the series award in all the 3 formats. This was Kohli’s first series award in Tests.

1 – Ravindra Jadeja became the first player to score a fifty, take 10-wicket match haul and take 3 or more catches in a Test match.

2 – Ravindra Jadeja is now only the 2nd Indian to score a fifty and take 10 wickets in a Test match. Kapil Dev did it against Pakistan in 1982, also at Chennai.

2 – This is only the 2nd instance of India winning 4 Tests in a series. India won 4 Tests in home series against Australia in 2013.

3 – This is only the 3rd match in Test cricket which had a player scoring a triple ton and a player taking 10 wickets in the match. Jayawardene scored triple and Murali picked 10 wickets for Sri Lanka vs South Africa in 2006 at Colombo (SSC). Pakistan’s Azhar Ali scored a triple ton and West Indies’ Devendra Bishoo took 10-wicket match haul in the day/night Test match at Dubai this year.

4 – Number of Tests India won under Virat Kohli against England, the most by India under any captain. India won 3 Tests under Azharuddin, Dhoni and Wadekar against England.

4 – England losing this Test by innings margin is the fourth instance of a team batting first and scoring 400+ and ending up losing by an innings. England lost in a similar fashion in the first innings.

4 – Ashwin and Jadeja doing the combo of 200 runs and 20 wickets in a Test series is only the fourth instance of two players doing this combo in the same Test series for a team and the first time for India. Last such instance was by Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock for South Africa vs West Indies in 2001.

6 – Number of times Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed Alastair Cook in this series, the most times an Indian dismissed a particular batsman in a Test series.

7/48 – Ravindra Jadeja’s figures of 7/48 in 2nd innings are his best bowling figures in tests. This was the first time he has picked up more than 6 wickets in an innings and also 10 wickets in a Test match.

8 – Number of Tests England lost in 2016, the joint most by any team in a calendar year. Bangladesh lost 9 Tests in 2003, the most by any team.

9 – Number of Tests India won in 2016, the most by them in a calendar year. India won 8 Tests in 2009.

12 – Number of Tests India played without losing in 2016, the 2nd most by any team in a calendar year. Pakistan in 1987 and England in 2004 played 13 Tests without losing one.

18 – Number of consecutive Test matches India have been unbeaten for in Tests, the longest unbeaten streak for India. Virat Kohli equaled Indian captain’s record of 18 matches unbeaten streak by Sunil Gavaskar with this game.

25 – Number of century opening stands Alastair Cook has been a part of in Test cricket so far, the most by any player. Graeme Smith and Jack Hobbs were involved in 24 century opening stands in this format.

25 – Number of wins India have registered in Tests against England, the most for them against any team. India won 24 Tests vs Australia.

477 – England’s first innings total of 477 is the highest first innings total for any team coming in an innings loss in Tests. Previous highest was 432 in 2001 also by England at The Oval against Australia.

1236 – Runs scored in the first innings of this Test by both sides, the most in a Test match which has produced a result. Previous highest was 1154 runs in 1930 Test match at Lord’s between England and Australia.

2011 – Last time before Ravichandran Ashwin, an Indian conceded 200+ runs in a Test by taking just 1 wicket was Harbhajan Singh in 2011 (1/218) also against England at Lord’s.
