India v New Zealand 1st Test, Day 2 – Statistical Highlights

After restricting India on day 1, the New Zealand top order, led by their captain Kane Williamson resisted the India’s spin duo on the rain effected 2nd day. India added 27 runs to their overnight score before losing their final wicket. Latham and Williamson shared an unbeaten century stand for 2nd wicket before the rain washed out play in the final session. New Zealand finished at 152/1 on day 2 with 166 runs behind India’s total.

Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during day’s play.

0 – Number of wickets India picked up in the 2nd session on day 2. This is the first time since 2013, India failed to pick a wicket despite bowling in a full session. Last time was vs Australia at Mohali on day 2 in 2013.

0 – Number of times a visiting team in India played first 50 overs in a Test innings by losing 1 or fewer wickets since 2013. New Zealand has played 47 overs losing only 1 wicket so far.

2 – Tom Latham became the 2nd New Zealand player to score a fifty in his maiden innings as opener in Tests in India. Brendon McCullum scored 65 at Ahmedabad in 2010.

3 – 6 Indian batsmen scoring between 30 and 65 in the first innings is the only the 3rd instance in Tests where India’s 6 batsmen scored more than 30 and none of them managed to get to 70. Last such instance was also vs New Zealand at Wellington in 2009.

5 – Number of century stands Kane Williamson and Tom Latham have recorded in Test cricket, the joint 2nd most by a New Zealand pair in the format.

35 – New Zealand’s opening stand in this game is the 2nd highest for a visiting team in India in the last 13 Test innings. Highest is 36 by Elgar and Bavuma at Delhi in 2015.

41 – The 10th wicket partnership between Jadeja and Umesh in the 1st innings of the game is the highest for that wicket for India since Dhoni-Ishant’s 58 at The Oval in 2014. Since then, no 10th wicket stand in 17 innings for India went past 30 in this format.

65* – Kane Williamson’s 65* is now the highest individual score by a New Zealand captain in his maiden Test innings in India. Glenn Turner also scored 65 at Mumbai in 1976.

2012 – Last time before New Zealand, a team crossed 150 run mark in Tests in India vs India by losing 1 or fewer wickets was England in 1st innings at Kolkata in 2012.

2013 – Last time a visiting team had a century stand in India in Tests was way back in 2013 by Australia at Mohali.

2013 – Last time two of the top 3 batsmen in the same Test innings scored 50+ against India in India was by Australia in 2013 at Mohali in first innings.
