Wridhhiman Saha will not play the historic Test match against Afghanistan which is all set to commence on June 14 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. He was hit on the finger while batting in the second qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The injury also kept him away from the title clash on Sunday against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, Saha has been advised the rest of five to six weeks to recover completely from this blow.
The franchise had informed the BCCI about Saha’s injury a day ahead of the final itself. Ideally, if he manages to recover within six weeks, it will not affect his chances for England tour as the five-match Test series will begin on August 1 in Birmingham.
Saha broke his thumb
The sources in the BCCI confirmed the news to Indian Express that Wriddhiman Saha has broken his thumb while facing Shivam Mavin at the Eden Gardens. Also, the selectors will be also announcing his replacement soon with the Test match only a fortnight away.
“Saha has been advised more rest as his medical report says he has a broken thumb and he can only play cricket after 5-6 weeks. He got hit while batting in Kolkata and that is why he couldn’t play the final against Chennai Super Kings. The BCCI will be announcing his replacement soon for the Afghanistan Test,” the sources in the BCCI told Indian Express on Monday.
It is likely that Parthiv Patel or Dinesh Karthik could be recalled to the side as the replacement for Saha. The former has been the second choice wicketkeeper of India recently as he had played a couple of matches in South Africa as well. Given the history of Saha’s injuries, the selectors will have to pick a backup wicketkeeper in the squad for the tour of England.
