Team India’s practice match against Leicestershire got underway yesterday (23rd June), and the visitors run tally was at 246/8 at stumps on Day 1. The Indian top order failed to make big contributions as skipper Rohit Sharma and opener Shubhman Gill were dismissed for 25 and 21, respectively. Virat Kohli was looking in good nick before the match was interrupted by rain and the former Indian skipper fell shortly after the resumption of play. Kohli was caught in front of the stumps on the score of 33.

Shreyas Iyer, who was coming in after a poor T20I series against South Africa, failed to disturb the scorers as he was dismissed for an 11-ball duck by compatriot Prasidh Krishna. Srikar Bharat provided much-needed runs to the Indian innings as he remained unbeaten on 70 after the day’s play. The wicketkeeper-batter received support from Umesh Yadav (23) and Mohammed Shami (18*) down the order.

The match was interrupted by rain, and eventually, the day’s play ended at just 60.2 overs. Bharat will be looking to add further to his run tally and breach the three-figure mark as India are on the quest for some vital runs from their lower-order batters. Leicestershire’s Roman Walker was impressive throughout the day as the 21-year-old accounted for five Indian batters, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, and Shardul Thakur.
