Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin rewrote record books on the final day of the ongoing first Test between India and New Zealand at the Green Park in Nagpur. The 35-year-old dismissed Tom Latham to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test matches. He went past Harbhajan Singh’s tally of 417 scalps in the format to get the feat. The off-spinner has indeed been sensational throughout his career and his numbers in the traditional narrate the entire story.

It has to be noted that Ashwin reached the landmark in his 80th Test match while Harbhajan, one of the finest off-spinners ever, required 103 games in the purest format to take 417 wickets. These numbers speak volumes of Ashwin’s prowess. Meanwhile, social media got flooded with congratulatory messages soon after the veteran dismissed Latham.

Harbhajan Singh was also quick to congratulate his fellow off-spinner for displacing him in the list of India’s highest wicket-taker in Test matches. “Congratulations @ashwinravi99 wish you many more brother.. God bless.. keep shining,” tweeted the 41-year-old alongside a couple of clapping emojis. The post went viral in no time as fans lauded Harbhajan Singh’s gesture.

It has to be noted that Harbhajan, who enjoyed a sensational run in the Test arena, was replaced by none other than Ashwin in the national team. Making his Test debut in 2011, Ashwin performed regularly and didn’t take long in cementing his place in side. The same cost him Harbhajan a regular spot in the playing XI.

Some reports even suggested that there’s some bad blooded between the two. However, Harbhajan had rubbished the rumours, saying he and Ashwin have mutual respect for each other. Speaking of Ashwin, the off-spinner would like to enhance his tally even further and take his side to numerous victories.

His upcoming target would be going past Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 Test scalps to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the traditional format. Notably, the top in his illustrious list is occupied by legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who took 619 wickets in his glorious Test career. While Ashwin is pretty certain to go past Kapil, displacing Kumble would take some beating.
